Engineering Analysis & Simulation in the Automotive Industry 2019
Automotive manufacturers and suppliers are constantly challenged with delivering innovative, safe, and dependable vehicles to market as efficiently as possible. As a result, engineering teams must discover, evaluate, and successfully implement leading-edge technology and methods to produce a reliable, effective outcome. Many of these efforts now come together under concepts such as Industry 4.0, Digital Twin, CAE Democratization, and Cloud Solutions. But what do these really mean for you, as a simulation specialist?
This NAFEMS seminar will address various questions, such as:
- What standards are emerging in advanced vehicle development?
- How can I create cost-effective reliable simulation models?
- What kind of physics are simulated in vehicle systems?
- What solutions are available to help me, and have others had success with similar applications?
- What steps should I take when exploring the widening technology landscape?

Sheet Metal Formability – Material Properties, Failure and Simulation

This workshop is intended to assist all those involved in the design of sheet metal components to identify the key material properties and potential failure modes during manufacture. The session will demonstrate how CAE methods can be used to simulate the manufacturing method in order to identify any potential problems with the process and establish if part design changes are required.
Workshop Topics:
- Introduction to sheet metal forming processes, especially those in use in the automotive sector
- Characterisation of sheet metal material properties for use in simulation
- Definition of process failure
- Discussion of the different materials in use in automotive body-in-white
- Description of how materials are tested to establish the required material parameters
- Application of simulation with an example using the Forming Limit Test
Simulation Driven Design of High-speed Data Communication Links for the Connected Car

With the ongoing developments towards autonomous driving and the complex HMI (Human-Machine Interface) requirements driven by the mobile market, today’s electronics engineers are faced with the difficult challenge of bringing together multi-gigabit communication and automotive reliability constraints. In order to address these new design challenges a simulation-based design flow is used for the development complex processor-based systems such as instrument clusters, driver monitoring cameras or infotainment units. Some of the most critical topics associated with high data rates and complex communication architectures are related the disciplines known as signal integrity (SI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In this workshop we will explore the basic tools and methods required in making design decisions and mitigating risk, by using specialised simulation tools. From transmission line theory to the complex modelling of a differential gigabit channel, this presentation will cover the basic concepts used in today’s electromagnetic (EM) simulation environments.
